A number of amendments to the IMO regulations came into force on January 1, 2008. The amendments, as detailed below, have affected the rules on the minimum training for ship security officer, for the lowering and recovery of fast rescue boats, and provisions for the transport of some dangerous goods

Code and Amendments to the STCW convention add new training and certification requirements for minimumpersons who are to be designated as ship security officer (SSOs)

The amendments to the STCW Convention and to parts A and B of the STCW Code include requirements for certificates of competency for ship security officers; specifications and minimum standards of fitness to official guidance on training for ship security officers.

The amendments also stipulate that up to July 1, 2009, the Parties to the STCW must continue to recognize personnel who have or may have qualifications as ship security officer obtained before the entry into force of this regulation .
